VISUAL CONCEPTS I

WEEK FIVE

TWO DIMENSIONAL DESIGN The Grid

In keeping with the manipulation of the flat surface, exploring the structure of the space is fundamental to composition.

In these exercises, we will compose visually. Composition refers to the arrangements of elements and characteristics in a defined area. We ultimately try to use composition to convey specific information and meaning.

For the first set of exercises, begin by dividing up the space in a 7" x 7" square using just the circle, square and triangle. Also, explore various grid styles. Then, define sections of the divided space with either black or white. We must review the energy created by these simple applications.

For homework: Follow through with several of the above exercises. However, use natural media to create the value. Something you draw or create, or something you find. Natural media can be anything that produces a value or texture: hand drawn shading, mechanically produced shading from printed media or photographs, fabric, bubble wrap, foil, etc. Be creative in your use of value.

These should be done on an 18² x 24² panel. These should be presented as a finished piece. CRAFT AND CREATIVITY ARE VERY IMPORTANT!
