mm-110-02 multimedia VISUAL CONCEPTS I
WEEK NINE
IMAGE STRUCTURE
Review the compositional skeloton of an image. Reduce it to 2d forms and begin to relate color and the division of space.
This next assignment has us assembling compositions using the basic principles of the 2-d formula and relating them to images with content.
Using the elements we have been using thus far:
FORM; relationships of forms, scale, repetition
THE GRID; vertical/horizonal, diagonal, circular.
COLOR; primary, secondary, cool, warm, value, saturation
Begin by looking at the provided images. These are works of various photographers of the last 50 years. For this assignment, we are going to look just for the STRUCTURE of these images. Try to understand them purely as form first. Look for the division of space, form, counterform, contour and value. Crop and scale as needed to to create this dynamic. Then combine two images together to continue a line or accomodate and ajacent shape. Try to then consider the content. pair up with contrast of scale or proportion in mind.
FOR NEXT WEEK
Next, assemble a compostion of images using the same guidelines, by inserting color and the grid. Define the lines in the image with color differentiation. Allow the lines to move across the adjacent image. WORK THOUGHTFULLY AND CREATIVELY! When you apply color, think about your decisions. Look at the color relationships. How are they situated on the color wheel? Are they cool or warm. Are they dark, light, or low saturation? Look at how the various languages are working: The image, positive and negative space, the line and contour in the image, the content, the scale and of course, the color.
DO TWO OF THESE FOR NEXT WEEK!
Also, for next week,
ROLLAGE
Rollage is an outgrowth of COLLAGE. It was done by slicing up 2 or 3 printed images into strips and assembling them in such a way as to make them look as though they are merging into one another. We'll be working in Photoshop by "copying" and "pasting into".
When creating a Rollage, work the same way we have been working. Keep in mind the "structure of the image". Work with the flow and disruption of the line. Work with the relationship of color. Work with the space and width of the strips of images and their pacing.
ABOVE ALL, WORK ARTISTICALLY AND CREATIVELY! Don't just treat this like an excercise, BRING LIVE TO YOUR COMPOSITION!
