WEEK TEN
Assemblage
Textural Collage
This is our first venture into the three dimensional piece. By adding a simple texture, we begin to interact with space, even if just on the surface. In the weeks to come, we'll work with a full blown dimensional piece, so this should serve as a good transition. This is basically a "relief", which means it's flat with a slight rise off the surface.
Create a composition mapping the division of space with circle, square, triangle. Translate it with texture and surface. I want you to create a collage based on a circle square triangle composition then assemble it with found materials to create a textural composition. Paper, rags, bubble wrap, cardboard, sand paper, painted on or drawn on surfaces, scratched or mottled surfaces etc, may all be called upon to develop your assemblage. Think of the visual texture, the tactile texture, the color and how it interacts with the rest of the composition.
I will be evaluating these pieces based on their thoughtfulness. This is where you should call upon your sensibilities as an artist. Up until now, we've had it easy by following directions for our assignments, making art is much more demanding. Engage the work. Think about the collaboration of the materials. Think about their color and texture and their overall visual presence. Most importantly, think about the composition and the application of the materials in the composition. Now that the materials are being used in a piece of art, what is their new role in the artwork. Think about the signifigance of the combined materials. What is their function outside of this piece as well as inside of this piece.

Types of Form
The next piece should be a collision or fusion of an inorganic and an organic form. This can be a relief or a fully dimensional piece. The object is to bring together the interaction of an organic and an organic form. Inorganic form more commonly called geometric form, has regular patterns . Geometric forms are made up of circles squares triangles or combination of those. Inorganic forms are fluid in appearance. Nature has an abundant supply of organic shapes and patterns that has long been an inspiration and source of objects of representation.
