THE GRID

In keeping with the manipulation of the flat surface, exploring the structure of the space is fundamental to composition.

In these exercises, we will compose visually. Composition refers to the arrangements of elements and characteristics in a defined area. We ultimately try to use composition to convey specific information and meaning.

For the first set of exercises, begin by dividing up the space in a 6" x 6" square using just the grid. Also, explore various grid styles. Then, define sections of the divided space with either black or white. We will then look at the range of possibilities we encounter just with the simple division of space with the grid. Next, divide the space using diagonals lines with both vertical and horizonal. Again, we must review the energy created by these simple applications.

Next, enter converging lines. This ultimately creates the illusion of space through perspective. Manipulate the pieces so that they reveal only what you want of the forms. Allow yourself to see both the illusion of depth as well as the flat composition. experiment with allowing one color to dominate. Work with dense compositions and sparse.

For homework, follow through with several of the above exercises. Also, using the above methods, work to create compositions incorporating a single word of text. Next create a composition using an image contour. To create the image contour, remove to background from the image and allow the image to function as a shape. When combining the image with the grid composition, choose an image shape that is sympathetic to the grid. Then try one where the image is in direct contrast. Right are some sample solutions.

Try to have you best work printed for review.

The images to the left are simple applications to get you started. Below, are sample ideas for the homework assignment.
